ニュースを眺めていると、世界はいつも極端だ。
大成功か、大失敗か。
英雄か、犯罪者か。
炎上か、称賛か。
だが、冷静に考えると不思議な話でもある。
もしそれが「普通」なら、ニュースになるはずがない。
メディアに映る出来事は、現実の代表ではない。
ほとんどの場合、それは分布の端にある外れ値だ。
人の人生も、企業経営も、社会現象も、
大半は「何も起きない時間」で構成されている。
地味で、再現性があり、語るには退屈だ。
だから可視化されない。
一方で、逸脱した出来事は目を引く。
頻度は低いが、感情を強く刺激する。
メディアは意図せずして、
「現実の全体像」ではなく
「例外だけを集めた世界」を作り出す。
問題は、ここからだ。
人は「よく目にするもの」を
「起こりやすいもの」だと錯覚する。
外れ値を見続けることで、
それが常態であるかのように感じてしまう。
結果として、
・成功は一部の天才だけのもの
・失敗は突然やってくるもの
・社会は常に不安定なもの
そんな歪んだ世界観が静かにインストールされる。
だが実際の現実は、もっと鈍く、もっと連続的だ。
多くの人は、少しずつ積み上げ、少しずつ失敗し、
大事件とは無縁のまま日常を更新している。
外れ値が無意味だと言いたいわけではない。
むしろ逆だ。
外れ値は「注目すべき点」ではある。
ただしそれは、
それ自体を真似るためではなく、
分布の形や構造を推定するために見るものだ。
メディアをそのまま信じる必要はない。
だが、切り捨てる必要もない。
外れ値を外れ値として認識できた瞬間、
私たちはようやく
「現実を、現実として見る位置」に立てる。

When you watch the news, the world always looks extreme.
Huge success or catastrophic failure.
Heroes or criminals.
Outrage or praise.
But if you think about it calmly, something feels off.
If those things were truly “normal,” they wouldn’t become news in the first place.
What appears in media is not a representative sample of reality.
In most cases, it is an outlier at the edge of the distribution.
Life, business, and society are mostly made of “quiet time,”
where nothing dramatic happens.
It is steady, repeatable, and frankly too boring to tell as a story.
That’s why it rarely becomes visible.
Deviations, on the other hand, capture attention.
They are rare, but emotionally intense.
Without necessarily intending to, media ends up building
not “a map of reality,” but “a world made of exceptions.”
The real issue starts here.
Humans tend to confuse what they see frequently
with what is likely to happen.
When you keep watching outliers, you begin to feel
as if they are the standard state of the world.
As a result, a distorted worldview gets quietly installed:
• success belongs only to a few geniuses
• failure strikes out of nowhere
• society is always unstable
Yet reality is usually duller—and more continuous.
Most people build little by little, fail little by little,
and keep updating their everyday lives far away from headline events.
This is not to say outliers are meaningless.
It’s the opposite: outliers do matter.
But they should be used not to imitate the outlier itself,
but to infer the shape and structure of the distribution.
You don’t need to believe media as-is.
But you also don’t need to dismiss it.
The moment you can recognize an outlier as an outlier,
you finally stand at a position where you can see reality as reality.
